Can a chicken really live without its head? Poultry seem to be pretty low on the evolutionary chain, at least so far as grey matters, but few more so than Mike, the Headless Chicken of Fruita, Colorado. After having his head lopped off on September 10, 1945, Mike continued to run around, attempt to preen his feathers, and even try to crow, for a whopping eighteen months. Feeding him with an eye dropper, promoter Hope Wade turned "Miracle Mike" into quite the sideshow attraction for his remaining months (pulling down no less than $4,500 per month). At his height of popularity, Mike was even featured in Life magazine. He was also examined by the officers of several humane societies and declared to have been free from suffering. Regrettably, in March of 1947, Mike succumbed to the inevitable and his wild ride was over. But the legend of Miracle Mike lives on to this day!
